Tensions between India and Canada deepen after Indian diplomats in Canada, including India's ambassador, were named as "persons of interest" in connection with a Canadian investigation, reports "Reuters".
India's foreign ministry categorically rejected the claims, calling them part of a political strategy by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau aimed at domestic political goals, BTA quoted.
Relations between the two countries deteriorated sharply in September 2023, when Trudeau said there was evidence of Indian agents' involvement in the assassination of a Sikh separatist leader on Canadian soil. India has denied these allegations and has repeatedly insisted that Canada has not provided any evidence for these allegations.
Following these events, in October 2023, Canada withdrew more than 40 of its diplomats from India after New Delhi demanded a reduction in Canada's diplomatic presence in the country.
The Indian government has stressed that Canada's actions are a deliberate attempt to discredit India for political reasons and reserves the right to respond to these allegations.
The US also got involved, saying Indian agents were involved in an assassination attempt on another Sikh separatist leader in New York in 2023.
