The EU expects countries applying for accession to follow European guidelines in the field of foreign policy and security, a European Commission spokesperson said in response to questions related to the list of participants in the meeting of the countries from the BRICS organization, quoted by BTA.
„We expect these countries to refrain from contacts with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and with Russia,”, he added. The EU seeks to isolate Russia for its violations of international law and expects all EU accession candidates to unwaveringly support European politics as part of their strategic orientation, the spokesman said.
According to him, the BRICS countries are feeling the consequences of the war in Ukraine, including the increased prices of food and energy carriers. “We expect them to contribute to Putin and Russia stopping violations of international law and withdrawing Russian military forces from the entire territory of Ukraine,” the spokesman said.
Russia is abusing its BRICS presidency to show it is not isolated. The EU supports UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who is looking for a way out of several simultaneous crises around the world. “We believe that within the framework of the meeting, he will repeat the call for Russia to unconditionally stop the attack on Ukraine, as stipulated by several resolutions of the UN General Assembly“, the spokesperson added.
