During a rally in Washington, newly elected US President Donald Trump said that he would begin building a missile defense system inspired by the Israeli "Iron Dome" system to protect the country from missile threats. "I will instruct our military to begin building a powerful missile defense shield. It will be entirely American", Trump said before his inauguration, quoted by Focus.
He stressed that one of the main priorities of the new administration would be to strengthen the US's defense capabilities.
"Iron Dome" is an Israeli missile defense system designed to intercept short-range unguided missiles, and its development began in 2004. to protect Israel from rocket attacks, including from the Gaza Strip.
Last year, Trump pledged to build a similar system to protect the United States, stating: "We do this for other countries, but we also do it for ourselves. We need that kind of protection."
