Haiti set to hold elections on November 15 - 1

Leslie Voltaire, the head of Haiti's transitional council, said the long-awaited general elections in the Caribbean country will be held on November 15 this year, Reuters reported, citing an interview he gave to TV5 Monde.

Haiti has not had elected parliamentarians since January 2023 and the country has not held elections since 2016. since.

The capital, Port-au-Prince, is almost entirely controlled by armed gangs, and Haitian leaders have said security must first be established before a free and fair vote can be held.

More than 1 million Haitians have been internally displaced by the conflict, and about half the country's population of more than 5 million people are starving, while a wide range of armed gangs have seized territory around the capital and in key agricultural areas, forcing Haiti's major ports to shut down several times.

The armed gangs exercise tight control over the areas in which they operate and have carried out several mass killings in recent months, while Haiti's justice system and much of the state apparatus remain paralyzed.
