Ilhan Küçük: Independent judiciary is a cornerstone of the rule of law - 1

„An independent judiciary is a cornerstone of the rule of law and of the EU's principle of mutual trust. In its reports on the rule of law, the Commission should focus on the role and structures of the judicial systems in the Member States, their periodic renewal, the transparency of their functioning and the availability of adequate administrative and judicial remedies against their decisions.“ This position was expressed by the Chair of the EP Legal Affairs Committee, Ilhan Küçük, during his participation in the Informal Meeting of Justice Ministers of the EU Member States, which took place in Warsaw on 31 January.
Küçük stressed that the rule of law is the basis of security in Europe.
„This is the basis of the European Union, of our integration and - when we negotiate for accession - a condition for participation in the European project. We must not forget that our European Union, our European project requires continuous and constant work, efforts and commitment in order to achieve positive results.“, said Ilhan Küçük.
Küçük also commented on the challenges facing the Member States in dealing with growing populism and radicalism and was categorical that when the rule of law erodes in a country, this inevitably affects the European project.
