From May 1, Greece will take over the presidency of the UN Security Council, ANA-MPA reported, quoted by BTA.

According to the Charter of the United Nations, the Security Council is the body that has the main responsibility for maintaining international peace and security.

“Greece, during its one-month presidency, will have the opportunity to demonstrate its strong diplomatic footprint, its role as a fair interlocutor and a bridge between East and West, North and South, having international law and the Charter of the United Nations as the main guidelines of its foreign policy“, said a statement from the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Greek ministry added that “maritime security, one of the six priorities of the two-year mandate of Greece in the Security Council, will be the topic of the central high-level event (within the framework of the Greek Presidency), which will take place on 20 May in New York“.

The topics of the Greek Presidency will also be the protection of civilians in times of war, “women, peace and security“ and “children in armed conflicts“.

The statement also notes that “the war in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East will be the central topic of the Security Council meetings. The processes in the Western Balkans, the situation in Libya and Sudan have also been selected among the main topics for discussion“.

“During its presidency, Greece, as a strong supporter of multilateral diplomacy, collective security and the peacekeeping role of the United Nations, will work together with all member states of the Security Council to preserve and strengthen international peace and security towards a rules-based international security architecture“, the statement by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said.
