Over 40% of Indians believe Donald Trump will be favorable to their country, Reuters reported, citing a poll by "India Today" magazine. The results were released ahead of the meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the US President in Washington, BTA reports.
The poll, titled "Mood of the Nation", shows that Trump has a positive image among supporters of Modi and his "Bharatiya Janata Party" (BJP). Only 15% of respondents thought he would be a bad or even disastrous choice for India.
The survey also found that supporters of both Modi and Trump were unanimous in their political views. Yashwant Deshmukh, an analyst at C-Voter, said there was a clear divide between left and right-wing voters.
The poll was released shortly before Trump announced that he would impose reciprocal tariffs on any country that imposes tariffs on American imports - a move that also affects India. The US administration has already expressed dissatisfaction with India's high tariffs, which are hindering US exports.
In addition to the attitude towards Trump, the poll also shows the current political mood in India. If the elections were held now, Modi's party would receive 47% of the vote, while the opposition, led by Rahul Gandhi and the "Indian National Congress" (INC) party, would collect 41%.
It is recalled that in the last elections, "Bharatiya Janata Party" lost its parliamentary majority for the first time in a decade and was forced to rely on coalition partners to form a government.
