Greek police have detained five people after an attack by the anarchist group „Rubicon“ in front of the home of Kostas Thassoulas, the newly elected president of Greece, Sky reported, BTA reports.
Last night, members of the group threw stones and chanted slogans in front of Thassoulas's home in Athens. All those detained were later released.
The incident sparked a sharp reaction from government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis, who called the perpetrators „representatives of the worst version of fascism“. He also criticized the opposition parties, accusing them of promoting „toxic rhetoric and slander“.
These accusations are linked to attacks on Thassoulas by opposition representatives who accuse him of being involved, as a former speaker of parliament, in covering up the facts surrounding the 2023 Tempe Pass train accident, which resulted in 57 fatalities.
The main opposition party PASOK condemned the attack on Thassoulas, but at the same time called on the government „not to fuel toxicity and stop using it for political purposes“.
