A suspected gas explosion at a store in the central Taiwanese city of Taichung has killed at least four people and injured 26, including tourists from the gambling hub of Macau, fire officials said, quoted by “Reuters“, reports News.bg.
The explosion occurred on the 12th floor of a building where construction work was taking place. According to the official statement of the fire department, the explosion caused serious damage from the ninth floor upwards.
Among the victims were two tourists from Macau, and five others were injured, the authorities said.
At the time of the incident, the restaurant on the 12th floor of the Taichung Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store was closed for renovations.
According to the Ministry of Health, one of the injured is in intensive care.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te reacted to the tragedy on social media, calling for an immediate investigation into the causes of the explosion.
