Costa Rica announced that it has agreed to accept migrants deported from the US, AFP reported, quoted by BTA.
“The government of Costa Rica has agreed to work with the United States to repatriate 200 illegal migrants to their country“, the presidency of the Central American country announced in a statement. According to the same source, the people in question come from “Central Asia and India“.
During his election campaign, US President Donald Trump promised to launch “the largest deportation program in American history“ of undocumented immigrants, using the armed forces if necessary.
Costa Rica is the third Central American country to agree to act as a transit point for citizens of various nationalities expelled from the United States, after Panama and Guatemala.
The first group will arrive in the Costa Rican capital San Jose on Wednesday on a passenger flight, the Costa Rican presidency said in a statement.
The passengers will then be transferred to a temporary reception center about 360 km from San Jose, the statement added. “The process will be financed entirely by the US government, under the supervision of the International Organization for Migration“, the Costa Rican presidency added.
