British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Monday there must be a US security commitment to European countries to send peacekeepers after the war and that it was too early to say how many British troops he would be prepared to deploy, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
"Europe must play its part and I am prepared to consider putting British forces on the ground alongside others if there is a lasting peace deal, but there must be support from the US, because security guarantees from the US are the only way to effectively deter Russia from attacking Ukraine again“, Starmer told reporters after a meeting of European leaders on Ukraine in Paris.
Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said after the meeting that defense spending would not be part of the EU's excessive deficit procedure.
He added that all participants in the meeting shared similar views to Poland on key issues and agreed that close cooperation within NATO was needed.
Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, for her part, said that all European countries should step up their support for Ukraine and increase their defense spending to protect themselves from Russia. “Unfortunately, Russia is now threatening the whole of Europe,” Frederiksen told reporters after the summit.
