American political scientist, head of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University in New York Jeffrey Sachs believes that the US and European project to expand NATO to the Russian borders is doomed to failure. He expressed this opinion in an interview with journalist Tucker Carlson, published on Tuesday.
„The war in Ukraine was the result of a very bad idea that the US started in 1994. It was a project to expand NATO to the east. It was not only about Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, but also about moving even further east, getting closer to the former Soviet Union and then penetrating it. I have personally told many European leaders many times that they will be trapped because this project will not work, it makes no sense. This is a game for the Americans, and for Russia it is a matter of life and death, so the Americans will not be able to win this, it is impossible, "he said.
Sachs added that none of the European leaders took his words seriously about the lack of real chances for the North Atlantic Alliance to set foot on Russia's borders, with the exception of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
"Our new Defense Minister Pete Hegseth told the truth for the first time: Ukraine will not join NATO. This is the absolute basis for peace. This truth could not be told for three decades. They could not admit what we all knew," the political scientist added.
