US President Donald Trump's decision to suspend military aid to Ukraine after a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office has sparked a strong response among American and European politicians, News.bg reports.
The suspension of aid deepens tensions between the two allies and raises serious concerns among Ukraine's Western partners, Reuters reports.
Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, sharply criticized the decision:
"By freezing military aid to Ukraine, President Trump has opened the door wide for Putin to intensify his aggression against innocent Ukrainians. The consequences will undoubtedly be devastating."
France's junior minister for European affairs, Benjamin Haddad, also disagreed:
"If you want peace, does the decision to stop military aid to Ukraine help? Or does it make it more distant? It makes it more distant because it only strengthens the positions of the aggressor - Russia," he told France 2.
The head of the Ukrainian parliament's foreign affairs committee, Oleksandr Merezhko, shared his disappointment:
"In reality, this looks really bad. It seems that he is pushing us towards capitulation, which means accepting Russia's demands."
Polish Deputy Defense Minister Czeszary Tomczyk described the decision as “bad news“.
The Hungarian government took the opposite position. Its spokesman said:
"The US President and the Hungarian government have the same position: instead of continuing with the sending of weapons and the war, a ceasefire and peace negotiations are needed as soon as possible."
