Calin Georgescu, the far-right candidate who came first in the annulled first round of the presidential election in Romania on November 24, has filed his papers again as an independent candidate for the presidential elections to be held in May, Agerpres reported, quoted by dariknews.bg.
Georgescu came to the Central Electoral Bureau in Bucharest, accompanied by his wife, as well as the leaders of the parties that support him – Gheorghe Simion from the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) and Anamaria Gavrila from the Youth Party (POT).
Hundreds of Gheorghescu's supporters also gathered at the site with flags, vuvuzelas and banners with his image, shouting his name and slogans such as “Freedom!“, “We will not bend!“, “Second round!“, “Peace, not war!“.
“Today I submitted my candidacy documents. On December 6, 2024 (when the Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the elections – ed.) democracy was killed, but today the Romanian people resurrected it. I submitted my candidacy on March 7, 2025. with 324 thousand signatures out of respect for the Romanian people, who understood that they had to defend their democracy“, said Georgescu.
“Throughout this entire period, we have been tested with fire and sword, and that is actually a good thing, because through suffering we have all learned and understood the fundamental values on which peace, democracy and freedom are based. Peace is not given to us, we must fight for it, as our ancestors and predecessors did with dignity. At the same time, we have raised the banner of democracy and freedom, which we have embraced together with (American) President Donald Trump, who has done the same with the Trump administration – Vance, in whose footsteps we follow in the promotion of the same shared values that we defend, namely peace, democracy and freedom,“ Georgescu said.
He rejected the possibility that his candidacy could be thwarted by the criminal prosecution against him. “This cannot happen because it would be a second violation of democracy and an internationally unacceptable position,“ the far-right politician said.
The Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the presidential election due to intelligence reports of foreign interference, specifically from Russia.
Georgescu was briefly detained on February 26 and questioned for five hours, after which the Prosecutor General's Office charged him with six crimes, including acts against the constitutional order and the creation of a fascist organization. The far-right politician was given a 60-day judicial control measure, a ban on leaving the country without permission from the court, and a ban on publishing content of a legionnaire, fascist, anti-Semitic, racist, or xenophobic nature on social media.
