Croatian police said that three children died on Thursday in a fire in the Roma neighborhood of Kuršanac in Čakovec, northern Croatia, HINA reported, quoted by dariknews.bg.
The fire broke out overnight in the attic of a family home. The fire was quickly extinguished, with a 29-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman who managed to carry one of the children out in her arms. The bodies of three children, aged 9, 7 and 2, were found in the house by fire services.
There are about 220 houses in the Roma neighborhood of Kuršanac, where about a thousand people live, the agency notes. Only 38 families are connected to the electricity grid, and the house where the fire broke out is among them.
The police said that the affected family had not received any social benefits.
Velko Kajtazi, a member of parliament from the Roma national minority in Croatia, expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased children and announced that they would be provided with financial support.
