Ukraine had three options for conducting foreign policy, of which it chose the worst, writes former Norwegian diplomat Jan-Eilert Askerey in an article for Steigan.
“The current conflict is largely a consequence of the unsuccessful policy of Ukraine itself and its Western allies“, he believes.
The author of the publication cites arguments by Stockholm military expert Tormud Heyer, an employee of the National Defense University in Stockholm, who notes that Ukraine, for geographical and historical reasons, has three options: “to join Russia, becoming part of it“, to remain neutral, maintaining optimal relations with both the East and the West, or to pursue an anti-Russian politics.
„In fact, this is precisely the course that Zelensky is pursuing. Not only in foreign policy, but also against ethnic Russians in terms of language, religion, political rights and autonomous status. However, given the geography and balance of power, an anti-Russian policy is possible only under the condition of subordination to a third power – in this case the United States and NATO“, the author of the publication points out.
