US President Donald Trump said on Monday he hoped his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin would agree to a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. At the same time, he did not say clearly how he would react if Putin rejected the proposal, Agence France-Presse reported.
Yesterday, the United States and Ukraine proposed a 30-day ceasefire after a bilateral meeting in Saudi Arabia. The same day, Trump said he would speak directly to Putin about the issue, likely this week, AFP notes.
Today, the US president said after a meeting at the White House with Irish Prime Minister Michaël Martin that his envoys were traveling to Russia to try to get its agreement to a ceasefire.
Asked at the press conference what he could do to convince Moscow to accept, Trump replied: "There are things I can do, and they wouldn't be nice... Financially, I can do things that would be very bad for Russia."
"I don't want to do that because I want peace," he added at the same time.
Earlier today, the Kremlin said it was waiting for details of the plan before deciding whether to accept it.
