A serious forest fire broke out this morning on the Greek island of Crete, state television ERT reported.
The fire is in the area of the village of Kalamitsi Amygdali, near Chania in the northern part of the island.
At 6:45 a.m., residents received messages from the emergency phone 112 to be on standby. According to Sky TV, there is currently no danger to the houses in the village.
30 firefighters and a team from the Special Forest Operations Unit with 10 fire engines and a helicopter have been sent to fight the fire.
Conditions in the area are characterized by high temperatures and strong winds. However, the mayor of the municipality of Apokoronos, Charalambos Koukyanakis, expressed cautious optimism to ERT that the fire would soon be brought under control.
Greek meteorologists predict temperatures in Crete to reach 30 degrees over the weekend.
