The Trump administration asked the Supreme Court on Thursday to overturn lower court decisions that blocked an order aimed at ending birthright citizenship. This is stated in a document published in the court's electronic database.
As Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Harris said in a cover letter, “nearly universal birthright citizenship has created strong incentives for illegal immigration“ and has led to “birth tourism“.
After taking office on January 20, Trump signed an executive order restricting birthright citizenship. The document provides for restrictions on granting US citizenship at birth to children of illegal immigrants. The next day, authorities in 22 states filed a lawsuit in U.S. courts to challenge the order. Several state courts then temporarily blocked the document.
