Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney has called early parliamentary elections, BNR reported.
They will be held in a little over a month - on April 28, half a year before the current parliament's term expires.
Carney explained that he needs a strong majority and powers to deal with the new threat from the south.
"We are facing the most significant crisis in our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified actions in trade policy and because of his threats to our sovereignty," Carney said.
Until two months ago, his Liberal Party was seriously lagging in the polls, but public opinion has changed radically since the resignation of the previous Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and, above all, after Trump's numerous statements about making Canada the 51st American state.
