Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said today that Tehran has rejected the possibility of direct negotiations with the United States in response to a letter from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the Islamic Republic's rapidly developing nuclear program, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
“Although the response rejected the possibility of direct negotiations between the two countries, it emphasized that the path to indirect negotiations remains open,“ Pezeshkian said.
The president's remarks represent the first official information on Iran's response to Trump's letter. They also suggest that tensions between Tehran and Washington could continue to rise, the AP reported.
It is unclear, however, whether Trump would accept indirect talks. Indirect talks, which have been ongoing for years since Trump withdrew America from the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers in 2018, have failed.
