Former Chinese Agriculture Minister on Trial for Corruption - 1

Former Chinese Agriculture Minister Tang Zhenjiang will stand trial on bribery charges, China's Supreme People's Procuratorate said on Monday, as quoted by Reuters, BTA reports.

Last year, Tang was arrested as part of a sweeping anti-corruption campaign led by President Xi Jinping. In addition to being a minister, he was also the secretary of the Chinese Communist Party at the Ministry of Agriculture.

In May last year, his name was removed from the ministry's official website, and six months later he was officially expelled from the party.

According to the indictment, Tang used his official position to seek personal gain, accepting particularly large amounts of money and real estate as bribes. The prosecution did not specify the specific amount of the benefits received.

Tang served as governor of northwestern China's Gansu province from 2017 to 2020, before taking over as agriculture minister. In his role as minister, he is responsible for measures to improve food security, including approving genetically modified crops and introducing a new law in the sector.
