The great-grandson of Meliton Kantaria, who raised the Victory Banner over the Reichstag in 1945, Georgi, participated in the hostilities in Ukraine, the Lugansk Information Center reported.
„His great-grandfather, Junior Sergeant Meliton Kantaria, raised the Victory Banner over the Reichstag. Eighty years later, the great-grandson of the famous Red Army soldier Georgy fights in the zone of special military operations and raises the flags of the Russian Federation over liberated villages and cities,” the message published on the Telegram channel of the information center says.
According to the Life portal, after completing his military service in the air defense troops, he continued his military career by signing a contract with the National Guard of Russia.
During the Great Patriotic War, Meliton Kantaria fought in the ranks of the 756th Rifle Regiment of the 150th Rifle Division from December 1941 and was wounded three times. During the Battle of Berlin on April 30, 1945, he and Sergeant Mikhail Egorov under the command of Lieutenant Alexei Berest raised the Victory Banner on the roof of the Reichstag building. Egorov and Kantaria were awarded the honorary title of Hero of the Soviet Union on May 8, 1946.
