The European Commission (EC) welcomes the formation of a new Serbian government and hopes that it will quickly take the necessary steps to keep Serbia on the path to the EU, an EC spokesperson told regional TV channel En1, BTA reported.
"As we have consistently stressed, we need to see credible and tangible progress on key reforms to unlock the next stages of the accession process, especially as regards the rule of law, media freedom, the fight against corruption, electoral reform and democratic institutions. As stated in our latest enlargement package, we also expect Serbia to seriously demonstrate its strategic commitment to the EU. This includes stepping up efforts to gradually align with EU foreign policy positions as a matter of priority," said EC spokesman Guillaume Mercier.
He added that the EU accession process requires intensive efforts from the whole of society.
"This must be a comprehensive national project (…). Our aim remains to support Serbia in its progress on the EU path," Mercier said.
The new Serbian government was voted in by parliament on Wednesday, and new Prime Minister Đuro Mazut officially took office yesterday.
