The United States will not allow the radical Palestinian movement Hamas to participate in the governance of the Gaza Strip in the future, President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House.
“We will not allow Hamas to do that“, Trump said. “We will see what happens with Gaza, but we have made great progress in the Middle East“, he stressed.
“What happened on October 7, 2023, should never have happened“, the American leader continued. “This would never have happened if I were president. But we will stop this whole situation," he concluded.
The situation in the Middle East deteriorated sharply after the penetration of armed Hamas supporters from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, accompanied by the killing of residents of border villages and the taking of hostages. In response, Israel launched a military operation in the enclave with the aim of destroying Hamas's military and political structures and freeing all those kidnapped. Since then, more than 51,000 Palestinians have been killed in the fighting in Gaza, and about 117,000 people have been injured.
On March 18, the Israeli army resumed military operations in the sector, launching massive strikes against it, thus breaking the ceasefire established in January 2025. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office attributed this to Hamas's rejection of proposals made during talks by mediators and US President's special envoy Stephen Witkoff, saying the aim of the operation was to free all hostages held in Gaza. The radicals blamed Israel and the US for the renewed hostilities.
