CNN: US plans to recognize Crimea as part of Russia and Russian control over Donbas and Novorossiya worry allies - 1

A number of US allies are extremely concerned about the plans of the administration of US President Donald Trump to recognize Crimea as part of Russia and Russian control over Donbas and the so-called Novorossiya from Moscow, CNN reported, citing diplomatic sources.

A CNN source called "progress" the fact that "Ukrainians were convinced to take a friendlier stance towards the US administration", commenting on the meeting of the Ukrainian delegation with Trump's special envoy for Ukraine Keith Kellogg in London. A German diplomat added that "any deal that is attractive to Russia will seem unprofitable to the Ukrainians, but Ukraine will have to come to terms with something within reason that differs from the agreement they would have liked to sign two years ago." The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that the list of US proposals for resolving the conflict in Ukraine includes points for the United States to officially recognize Crimea as Russian, tacitly recognize Russia's control over Donbas and Novorossiya, and remove from the agenda discussions on the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO. The Trump administration, however, is not offering any guarantees for Kiev's security if the Ukrainian side agrees to a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Russian President Dmitry Peskov, in an interview with the French magazine Le Point, said that the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the territories of Donbas and Novorossiya, "which are part of Russia", is necessary to achieve peace in Ukraine.
