The US administration is holding high-level consultations with Iranian authorities about Tehran's nuclear program, US President Donald Trump said in a conversation with journalists aboard his plane en route from Washington to Rome.
"The Iran deal is going very well. We are dealing with Iran at the highest level. I think they want to make a deal and we want to make a deal. There are people who want to make another deal, a much worse deal, and I don't want that to happen with Iran if we can avoid it," he said, without specifying what he meant.
"The situation with Iran is going very well. We have had many conversations with them. And I think we will reach an agreement - I would prefer a deal to another alternative. It would be good for humanity, "the head of state added.
According to him, maintaining nuclear weapons will cost Tehran dearly. "It's a very simple deal - they simply cannot have nuclear weapons. I will save them a lot of money just by doing this. Having nuclear weapons is very expensive. But it is also very dangerous, and they cannot have nuclear weapons. This is the only reason why I will save them billions and billions of dollars, whatever it would cost," the head of the White House noted.
On April 12, the first round of indirect negotiations between representatives of the United States and Iran, mediated by Oman, was held in Muscat on the situation surrounding the Islamic Republic's nuclear program. The Iranian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and the American delegation was led by the special envoy of the US President, Stephen Witkoff. On April 19, the second round of indirect talks between Iran and the United States took place in Rome, mediated by Oman. According to Araghchi, the parties reached greater mutual understanding on a number of issues. The next round of talks between Araghchi and Witkoff is scheduled for April 26.
