Knowing what the VIN number is, a criminal can guess the manufacturer's PIN to access the immobilizer. In addition, one can easily buy a widget from various trading platforms such as AliExpress, for example.
When connecting this gadget to the OBD connector, a PIN code is also obtained, through which the functionality of the car's systems is checked. But this is a more complicated method, it requires initial access to the car.
The so-called signal relay method is particularly dangerous for car owners with a keyless entry system. Attackers use "repeaters" to intercept the signal from the smart key. Such devices are also readily available in the Chinese online mall.
You can protect yourself by disabling the keyless entry system or using a Faraday cage case that blocks the smart key signal.
To steal old cars, criminals use mechanical methods to open the car using such a simple tool as a pin, use it to turn the lock and then, connecting the cables, start the car's engine. The devices in question are also found on Chinese online trading platforms.
