Complex repairs on the island of Lesbos were carried out by the Bulgarian Central Energy Repair Base (CERB). The enterprise repairs the largest generator in the power plant that provides the island's energy needs, incl. the NATO military base there. The contractor is the national electricity company of Greece – Public Power Corporation, which provides electricity to 8.8 million consumers.
The generator was transported from Lesbos to Sofia by water, being loaded on a truck and with a truck crane. “We brought it to Bulgaria because there were no conditions for repairs on the island. It would be expensive to “transfer” our repair base there. There was also a huge difference between the tests we could do on Lesbos and those we did in our laboratories, commented Eng. Krasimir Kolev from CERB, head of the "Rotating Electric Machines" department.
The whole repair takes almost 6 months. “The other participants in the auction gave up because of the complexity of the order,” explains engineer Kolev. “It is one thing to repair a generator, quite another – to strengthen the floor, make a track and a completely new stator cage“.
The island of Lesbos is the third largest island in Greece. Its power plant is autonomous. The power station has 6 generators. The Bulgarian company is repairing the largest of them, generator No. 6.
