The concessionaire “Fraport Twin Star Airport Management“ JSC announces the plans for the complete rehabilitation of the runway at Burgas Airport and the resulting need to temporarily close the airport for six months during the winter period of 2025/26.

The runway at Burgas Airport was built in 1962. and further modernized in 1980. Due to its age and technical condition, a complete rehabilitation is necessary for the safety of its operation, since it is safety that is the absolute top priority for the company. The rehabilitation will be the foundation to accommodate the expected traffic volumes over the next two decades. In order to minimize the impact on the tourist season, the repair works will be carried out exclusively and only during the winter months – in the period of November 2025. – April 2026

The aim is to keep the closure period as short as possible. In preparation for safe operation during summer traffic in 2025, three weeks of runway maintenance work is required, which is also scheduled during the low traffic month ahead of the busy season of March 2025. Avoiding negative impacts on traffic and tourism is a main goal for “Fraport Twin Star Airport Management“ AD during the rehabilitation of the runway and all other repair works.

The total amount of the investment is approximately 50 mln. EUR, which will be invested in the rehabilitation of the pavement, surrounding areas, drainage and a new lighting system. In addition, this period will be used to make additional multi-million dollar investments in the platform areas. The planning of this project was carried out with specialists with international experience from the “Fraport“ Group. and reputable external
companies, in accordance with the obligations under the General Plan 2022-2026 and in full agreement with the Ministry of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Bulgaria, as well as with the Municipality of Burgas.

Since the beginning of the concession in 2006, more than 110 million have been invested in infrastructure projects at Burgas Airport. EUR. This is an important part of the policy of “Fraport Twin Star Airport Management“ AD for upgrading the infrastructure of Burgas Airport as modern, safe
and an attractive airport for airlines and passengers to continue to further increase the airport's year-round traffic and connectivity.
