The American corporation Meta (Facebook) plans to introduce a paid subscription without ads for users in Europe. This was reported by the newspaper The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) with reference to the document that the company offered to European regulators.
According to its information, if users do not agree to the use of their data for personalized advertising, they will have to pay about 14 USD per month to use Instagram without ads on mobile devices or about 17 USD to use Instagram and Facebook on a computer.
This step is related to the tightening of European Union rules that require companies to obtain user consent before showing personalized advertising, the newspaper indicates. The subscription is called SNA (Subscription Without Ads), and Meta expects to launch it in the coming months. Users will be able to choose whether to use the services for free, as usual with ads, or pay for an ad-free version.
The subscription will cost about $10 per month on a computer for one Facebook or Instagram account, and about $13 on mobile devices, taking into account Apple and Google app store fees.
It is unclear whether regulators in Ireland or Brussels will find the new plan compatible with EU law or will insist that Meta offer cheaper or even free ad-supported versions, the WSJ reported.
