Very soon, online declarations are expected to be available, through which the Sofia Municipality collects information on the amount of waste generated by citizens and businesses.

Since the beginning of this month, the local administration has launched a campaign aimed at helping determine the exact amount of the "household waste" (MSW) fee, since from January 1, 2026. the "polluter pays" principle must come into force.

This is what the Bulgarian National Radio summarized.

Filling in the declarations, through which data on the quantities of waste generated, the number of users of the property and the weekly frequency of waste transportation are collected, is completely voluntary, but the Municipality hopes to receive as much information as possible in order to make the approach to determining the amount of MSW as fair as possible.

In front of the Bulgarian National Radio-Radio Sofia, Emil Georgiev - head of the Directorate of ''Planning and Management of Waste Activities'' at the Sofia Municipality, noted that although the determination based on the “polluter pays” is most applicable to Sofia, the other methods that are legally selected for calculating the amount of MSW can also be applied.

"We will try to make the payment more and more fair. The current principle is not suitable – according to the tax assessment of the property. For Sofia, it is easiest to apply the criterion "number of household members".

The capital's waste treatment company submits detailed data on the incoming quantities from each garbage truck.

Emil Georgiev pointed out that 2025 is a key year – pilot projects related to the collection and utilization of waste continue. An example of this are 25 mobile centers that should be opened in the coming months, "green islands" and others.
