The Council of Europe criticizes the authorities in Sofia and the national authorities for the demolition of Roma houses in the Sofia district of "Zaharna Fabrika". This is stated in a statement by the permanent rapporteur on human rights of the organization's Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, BNT reports.
According to the institution, Roma families, including children, elderly people and people with disabilities, have been left without homes and means. Furthermore, the demolition of some Roma houses has been carried out despite a halt order issued by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
The Council of Europe calls on the Mayor of Sofia and the Bulgarian national authorities to immediately take all appropriate measures to protect the Roma families affected, including by providing alternative housing or temporary accommodation.
