The total investment in the construction of a new attraction area in Disneyland Shanghai will be about 2, 5 billion yuan (US$343.8 million), according to a statement by park operator Shanghai International Resort, which announced an open tender for the implementation of the project.

The fact that Disneyland Shanghai is planning a new expansion became known in March, but no details were revealed. It was only stated that it would be built next to a Zootopia themed area. Disneyland Shanghai is an American-Chinese project based on the ideas of local and Western designers. Together, they invested USD 5.5 billion in the construction of the first Disneyland in mainland China.

Currently, the Shanghai amusement park has eight theme areas: Adventure Island, Imagination Gardens, Mickey Avenue, Tomorrowland, Treasure Cave and ;Fantasyland", "Toy Story" and "Zootopia". In 2023, construction began on a third themed hotel with 400 rooms in the park.

In 2023, according to official data, Shanghai Disneyland, which also includes hotels and a shopping area with restaurants, was visited by about 25.6 million people - a 44% increase from 2019. The park's revenue last year amounted to 18.5 billion yuan (2.5 billion USD), an increase of 84% compared to 2019. Both indicators reached record levels since the park opened.
