The majority of Britons are "against" the renovation of Buckingham Palace in London to be carried out at the expense of taxpayers, according to the results of a survey by the sociological company YouGov, commissioned by the newspaper The Times.

According to the survey, in which 2,500 Britons participated, 56% of respondents said that the British government should not finance the renovation of the 775-room residence of King Charles III. At the same time, only 29% of respondents supported the use of budget funds for the renovation of the palace, which is estimated at 369 million pounds (460 million USD). The rest could not give a clear answer.

The phased renovation of Buckingham Palace began in 2017 and should be completed within 10 years. In November, The Times reported that appointments to the residence would be suspended from December 2024 to 2027 due to the renovations. All state events during this time will be moved to Windsor Castle, located west of London. Charles III himself will continue to live in his capital residence, Clarence House.

Buckingham Palace became the official London residence of the British monarchs in 1837, after Queen Victoria came to the throne. The building was purchased by the royal family in 1761 from Baronet Charles Sheffield. The palace was expanded and rebuilt several times in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century.
