On December 31, the Orthodox Church honors the Rev. Melania of Rome.
The Rev. Melania lived in the 5th century and was a rich and prominent citizen of Rome. When she heard stories about the hermits living in the East, she decided to imitate their wonderful life.
Barely 20 years old, St. Melania distributed all her property to the poor and devoted herself to prayer, spiritual asceticism, and service to her neighbors. She built monasteries, hospitals, and orphanages. She converted many pagans and heretics to the Orthodox faith.
She died in extreme poverty in 434.
On December 31, St. The Church honors the memory of the two Melanias - the grandmother and granddaughter, and her pious husband Apinian.
Today, all ladies who bear the name Melania celebrate their name day.
