St. Gregory was born in Arianes - a village near the city of Nazianzen, Cappadocia region. He was the son of Bishop St. Gregory of Nazianzen and St. Nonna. He studied with St. Basil the Great in Athens. The Church honors him as one of the great theologians, writers and poets. As archbishop, he led the church in Constantinople for 12 years and retired to Nazianzen, where he died in 390. at 80 years old.
St. Gregory, St. Basil the Great and his brother St. Gregory of Nyssa form the triad of the "three Cappadocians". St. Gregory is a master of speech and poetic speech.
Information about his life is given to us not only by the writings of St. Basil the Great and Blessed Jerome, but also by his own works, especially his letters and autobiographical poems.
