Marchand dethrones Millac in Paris 200m butterfly final - 1

Leon Marchand dethrones Christoph Millac in epic final in the 200-meter butterfly for men at the Olympic swimming tournament in Paris, BTA reported.

The Frenchman "exploded" the audience in the "Defense Arena" with a phenomenal last 50 meters and beat world record holder and Tokyo 2020 champion Milak.

Marchand won a second gold of the home Games after his triumph in the 400m medley.

The hegemon in this discipline, Milak, started confidently and led convincingly after the first half of the distance. After the last turn, the Hungarian fell physically and was overtaken by Marchand, who literally in the last meters took the lead and finished first with a new Olympic record - 1:51.21 minutes.

Milak took the silver with 1:51.75, and the bronze went to the Canadian Iliya Haroun with 1:52.80.

Hong Kong's Shibon Bernadette Howie, Olympic runner-up in Tokyo three years ago, took the bronze in 52.33 seconds. She also won her second medal of the Paris Games after bronze in the 200m freestyle and collected her fourth Olympic honor overall.
