Manchester United will continue to play their home games at “Old Trafford” during the construction of their new stadium worth 2 billion pounds, the project's lead architect has confirmed.
Earlier this month, the club revealed its plans for a modern facility with a capacity of 100,000 seats, which will replace the current legendary stadium after 115 years of history. The new project is part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's vision to create a “Wembley of the North”.
Initially, the option of renovating “Old Trafford” was also considered, but in the end it was decided that building a completely new stadium was the better option. One of the main problems with expanding the current facility is its proximity to the railway line behind the South Stand, which would make construction work complicated and expensive.
The new stadium will be built slightly to the west of the current one, avoiding engineering challenges. This location will allow Old Trafford to remain in use until the new facility is complete and the club is ready to move.
“The idea is that Manchester United will continue to play at Old Trafford throughout this process,“ said the architect from Foster + Partners Patrick Campbell told “ManUtd.com”.
Although United have always been a club that strives for the best in all aspects, including infrastructure and facilities, the biggest shortcoming of the new stadium is the loss of the historical connection with “Old Trafford”. The original 1910 structure has barely survived the destruction of the Second World War and the subsequent renovations in the 1990s, but the homage to the past remains alive through symbols such as the clock and the Munich tragedy memorial, as well as the various statues around the stadium.
