EV-oriented customers now have more choices than ever, but not all options are so as good as others. Of the roughly 50 EVs tested by Consumer Reports last year, only 14 made the final list as recommended. So which EVs are the best according to CR?

Highly rated is the BMW iX, awarded a score of 84 out of a possible 100. It also earns top honors in the luxury electric SUV class, ahead of the Genesis GV60 with a score of 75, Lexus RZ - 74, Audi Q4 e- tron - 71 and Audi Q8 e-tron - 70 out of 100.

For most users, however, the iX and company are out of their price range. When it comes to mainstream electric cars, the winner is the Hyundai Ioniq 6, which scored an impressive 83 out of 100 points. The second highest rated mainstream EV also comes from the Hyundai group, in the form of the Kia Niro Electric, scoring 71 out of 100.

For those willing to stretch their budget a bit, the BMW i4 is the best option in the luxury car segment. Like the Ioniq 6, it scores 83 out of 100. That puts it ahead of the Porsche Taycan, which has a score of 76 despite being priced almost $30,000 more than the i4.

The Kia EV6 is also quite highly rated, returning home with 77 points. This electric car is followed by the only Tesla on the list, the Model Y, awarded 72 out of 100 points. Consumer Reports also recommends the Nissan Ariya and the Ford Mustang Mach-E, both of which receive a score of 70. The only pick in the three-row SUV category is the Kia EV9 with a score of 98.
