Turkey's President Tayyip Erdogan will visit the United States of America on May 9. This was stated by a Turkish security official quoted by Reuters. This will be the first meeting of the Turkish leader with the administration of Joe Biden.
This will be Erdogan's first visit to Washington since 2019.
Ties between the NATO allies, long strained by differences on a range of issues, have thawed since Ankara ratified Sweden's bid to join the alliance in January, after a 20-month delay that frustrated the US.
The security officer did not provide detailed information about the visit. He noted that senior Turkish intelligence official Ibrahim Kalin will meet with members of the US House of Representatives to discuss the planned visit and other bilateral issues.
Biden and Erdogan are also expected to discuss the war between Israel and Hamas, as well as defense industry cooperation, including Turkey's recently approved purchase of US F-16 fighter jets.
