Former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, who had been a supporter of the cause of Scottish independence for decades, has died at the age of 69, BTA reported.
Scottish Labour leader Annas Sarwar confirmed Salmond's death and said he had been a central figure in Scottish politics for three decades. A source from the party Salmond led also confirmed the former Scottish First Minister's death. The causes of his death remain unknown.
Salmond, while leader of the Scottish National Party, led the campaign for the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. Then the supporters of the cause of Scottish independence received only 45 percent of the vote and lost the referendum.
Salmond resigned as leader of the Scottish nationalists in the midst of allegations of sexual harassment. He subsequently created a new party called “Alba“.
Salmond was the first minister of Scotland from 2007 to 2014 and was twice the leader of the Scottish National Party - from 1990 to 2000 and from 2004 to 2014, the Associated Press recalls.
On the occasion of the news of his death, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from the Conservative Party Rishi Sunak said that Salmond was a significant figure in British politics“. Sunak recalled that he had disagreements with Salmond on issues related to the British constitution, but added that his ability to lead debates or his passion for politics could not be denied.
