Aleksandar Vucic warns opposition: I will not flee Serbia, I am not Bashar Assad - 1

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic accused foreign intelligence agencies on Tuesday of trying to oust him from power after protests grew in the country, reports AP.

He insisted he will not flee the country like ousted Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad.

Vucic posted a video address on Instagram saying: "I will fight for Serbia and serve only my Serbian people and all other citizens of Serbia, I will never serve foreigners, those who seek to defeat , humiliate and destroy Serbia. If they think I'm Assad and that I'm going to run away somewhere, I won't do it," Vucic said.

Vucic said that in the next few days and weeks, he would reveal "in full detail how much money was paid in the last four years to destroy Serbia" and become a vassal state "which will not make its own decisions or choose its own future, but will instead have to listen to and serve someone else.

Opponents of the populist leader have compared him to Assad, who fled to Moscow from rebels, ending his family's half-century rule.

This comes amid protests sparked by the collapse of the roof of a railway station in the northern city of Novi Sad, which killed 15 people on November 1.

Protesters in Novi Sad, Belgrade and other Serbian cities blamed the tragedy on rampant corruption in the country.
