Ukraine's position in potential negotiations with Russia will be weakened if Washington backs down from its stated readiness to help Kiev. This was stated by US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan at an event in New York.
„The current and next administrations must demonstrate a willingness to help Ukraine and provide it with the necessary defense tools, as this will become leverage to achieve a good result at the negotiating table. Otherwise, Ukraine will not be put in the best position in the negotiations,“ he said.
Sullivan called the idea of the newly elected US President Donald Trump to include China in the process of resolving the Ukrainian conflict logical.
“The idea that China could somehow be a party to negotiate a just peace in Ukraine is not crazy“, Sullivan said. “I think the idea that Trump put forward is logical, and I have thought about it too“.
Sullivan noted that China is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and is “an important player on the world stage“. The Biden adviser added that he had discussed the role that Beijing could play in resolving the conflict with representatives of China, European countries and Ukraine. At the same time, he said, Washington would not want China to become the “main mediator“ in European affairs.
Earlier this month, Trump said there was an urgent need for a “ceasefire and negotiations“ to end the Ukrainian conflict, noting that China “can help“ in the negotiation process. The elected American leader believes that otherwise the Ukrainian crisis “could escalate into something much bigger and much worse”.
On December 17, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that Beijing has always maintained an objective position on the Ukrainian conflict. He noted that China will continue to play a constructive role in its political settlement.
