Two Union Pacific employees were killed and three people were injured when a freight train collided with a tractor-trailer and derailed in a small town in West Texas, authorities said, quoted by the Associated Press and BTA.
The train derailed in Pecos after a collision at a railroad crossing. Union Pacific said two employees were killed. Pecos Police Chief Lisa Tarango said other injuries were minor.
The train was carrying lithium-ion batteries and airbags, but none of them fell from the train during the derailment.
The diesel fuel spill has been contained, officials said.
Ronald Lee, Reeves County's emergency services chief, said some of the injured were in the Chamber of Commerce building, which was damaged in the derailment. He said the damage to the building was "significant enough" that officials advised no one to enter until an engineer had inspected it.
