The US's heightened security concerns in the Arctic are fully justified in view of the increasing activity of Russia and China in the region, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said today in an interview with Danish television, quoted by "Reuters" and BTA.
US President-elect Donald Trump, who is due to take office on January 20, said yesterday that he does not rule out the possibility of taking military or economic measures against Denmark in order to annex Greenland to the US.
NATO did not respond to a request from "Reuters" for comment on the subject.
Denmark is a member of NATO and the European Union, while Greenland, although not part of the EU, is part of NATO because it is a territory of Denmark.
Greenland's Prime Minister, Mute Egede, leader of a party supporting the island's future as an independent country, will meet with Danish King Frederick X in Copenhagen later today.
