The number of Christians in the US Congress continues to decline - 1

Since 2009, the number of Christians in the US Congress has been steadily decreasing, Aleteia.org reported, citing a study by the Pew Research Center.

This trend will continue in the 119th Congress. The number of Christians in the highest American legislative body is decreasing, but remains a majority.

Christians will make up 87% of the voting members in the Senate and House of Representatives, the current study shows. That’s down from 88 percent in the last session and 92 percent a decade ago.

Overall, there will be 461 Christian members of Congress, down from 469 in the previous Congress and 491 during the 2015 session. That would be the lowest number of Christians since 2009.

Of the 461 Christians in the 119th Congress, 295 are Protestants. Baptists are the largest Protestant group in the new Congress, with 75 members (14.1 percent of Congress). The new Congress also has 150 Catholics, two more than the previous one.

The religious survey also found that there are 32 Jews, three Buddhists, and only four Muslims in the U.S. Congress. 21 members did not answer or declined to answer about their religious beliefs.
