The combination of weak institutions and the rise of technology does not bode well for the world in the coming years. As President, I have served all Bulgarians and learned a lesson from our ancestors, who told us to build a pure and holy republic, to be equal to other European nations. This can be achieved in a union for peace, such as the European Union, which I believe is the best solution for progressive humanity when it has sought peace. I have been a very pro-European president and peace is only possible when there are rules of the international legal order and institutions that guarantee that these rules are respected and politicians who work for it. When a US president starts explaining how he annexed Greenland or the Panama Canal, he summons the ghosts of the worst in human history, when great powers distribute spheres of influence. Bulgaria has suffered a lot. If we have learned the elementary lesson - should we point to the Berlin Congress or Churchill's writing on napkins, who decides which direction Bulgaria should go and which Greece. The result for Bulgaria is always the same - a national catastrophe. When great powers play with spheres of influence, Bulgaria always loses a lot, he explained.
I was invited to President Trump's inauguration, but I declined for reasons of principle, because I disagree not with the past, but with what he is yet to do. I see that President Trump does not understand the lesson of history, that peace is possible only when a president understands that the size of a country does not matter. The success of a president is not measured by territory, but by the success of the ordinary person. In the future, we have reason to worry that the request he is making is for greater international instability, Plevneliev revealed.
