European troops could be stationed in Greenland - 1

It would make sense for European troops to be stationed in Greenland, said the chairman of the European Union Military Committee Robert Brieger in an interview published today for the "Welt am Sonntag" newspaper, quoted by Reuters, BTA reported.

"In my opinion, it would make perfect sense not to have only American troops in Greenland, as has been the case until now, but to consider the possibility of stationing European Union soldiers there in the future," Brieger said in the interview. Ultimately, such a step would require a political decision, the Austrian-born general pointed out.

The European Union does not have its own army and NATO is the main military alliance for EU countries. Although Greenland is not part of the EU, as it is an overseas territory of Denmark, Europe, like the United States, has interests there, notes Briger, citing Greenland's natural resources and its strategic location.

US President Donald Trump has expressed interest in Greenland and wants to annex it to the United States. He has not ruled out the use of military or economic force to achieve this goal.
