The United States has stopped issuing passports that have the symbol "X" in the "gender" column, which was previously used by people who identify as non-binary - i.e. neither male nor female, NOVA reported.
This was the result of an executive order signed by President Donald Trump on the first day of his second term, the State Department announced.
"The State Department is no longer issuing American passports with the "X" in the gender column, a spokesman for the US diplomacy told AFP. So requests for passports with this symbol in the gender column are no longer being considered, he added. The spokesman said that instructions would be issued at a later stage on what people who already hold such passports should do.
Trump signed an executive order on January 20, the day he took office, ordering the government to recognize the existence of only two sexes, determined at birth. "From today, the official policy of the United States will be that there are only two sexes, male and female," the head of state said in his inaugural address as the 47th president of the United States.
In addition to "restoring biological truth", the executive order also prohibits the use of federal funds "to promote gender ideology".
